IMapS Help
Each IMapS tool enables you to actively change the appearance of your map to display the information, location and data you require.

IMaPs tools are located to the left and right of the map. Brief instructions on how to use each tool will appear if you hover the mouse over the tool icons. Here you will find an index of the tools available in IMapS, providing you with brief descriptions of their function and applications.

Legend Menu
Legend
The legend menu operates in support of the layers menu by providing an explanatory list of the symbols, colours and points displayed in the layers on your map.

Language :anguage The language selection option allows you to choose the language in which the information will be displayed.

Refresh Map
Refresh Map
You will use the "Refresh map" button regularly throughout the process of creating your map - it updates your map with any new selections you have made from the list of layers by requesting that information to be loaded onto your map.

Layers Menu
Layers
The layers menu provides you with a list of the information available to be plotted and displayed on your map. This menu will enable you to control the environmental and conservation related information to be layered across your map.

Visible Layers
Visible Layer
By making a layer visible, you can plot information relating to that layer on your map. You can make multiple layers visible at the same time, allowing you to cross-compare the data displayed on your map.To make layers visible on the map, atick the corresponding tick-box next to the selected layer and click the Refresh Map button.

Active Layers
Active Layer
Making a layer active allows you to access information relating a specific visible layer on your map. It is important to remember that only one layer at a time can be active and it must be visible at the same time. To make layers active on the map, tick both the tickbox and the radial button next to the selected layer and click the Refresh Map button.

Zoom In
Zoom In

Use to pinpoint your area of interest within IMapS - Select Zoom In and click once on the map in the centre of your chosen area. IMapS will generate a new map.

Zoom Out
Zoom In
Displays a larger geographic area on your map - Select "Zoom Out" and click on the point in the map that you wish to make the centre of the larger area to be displayed. IMaPs will automatically update your map.

Previous Extent
Previous Extent
Acts as a one-step back button; enabling you to return to the previous map you have created. Selecting "previous Extent" again will return you to your current map so you can only toggle between these two maps.

Full Extent
Full Extent
Displays the full extent of the area covered by IMapS. Use the "previous extent" tool to return to your current map.

Pan Tool
Pan
The "Pan" tool allows you to shift your map to display adjacent areas. Select the pan tool in the toolbar and holding down the select button on the mouse, click on the map. You will be able to grap your map to move it to a new position within the map window.

Coordinates Tool
Coordinates tool
The "Coordinates tool" allows you to precisely define the location of your map within the ImapS. By using coordinates, defining the country or region of interest or by using the Gazetteer, you have complete control over the map displayed by IMapS.  Select the "coordinates" tool from the toobar and the control panel opens up to dispay the functions available for selection.

Data Query
Dat Query
The data query tool allows you to access information directly related to the layer that is currently Active on your map. Click on the point of interest on your map and a pop-up will appear, presenting data and information relating to the precise location of your data query.

Data Select
Dat Select
Data Select allows you to access information relating to a selected area within the Active layer. This tool is ideal if there are a number of symbols within close proximity displayed in the Active Layer as shown in the image here.

Eraser
Eraser
Clears any selections visible on the map, to display an essentially clean map.

Measure
Measure
Allows you to calculate distances between the locations displayed on your map. Select the "measurement tool" from the toolbar, a small frame will open up to lie on top of the map. Click on the point you wish to measure from and to, a red line will appear on the map joining these 2 points - the measurement frame will display the total distance between these 2 points

Buffer
Buffer
The buffer tool allows you to compare the location of active symbols in an Active Layer to features located nearby in other layers. By querying a specific area within an Active layer, you can create a buffer zone around that area to locate features of other layers within a specified distance.

Print
Print
Allows you to print a permanent copy of your map retaining all the information and features displayed. Select the Print tool in the toolbar. The control panel will open up to display a number of options to customise your printout. You can customise the title, layout and size of your printout. Click "Create Print" and a pop up preview of your printout will appear - proceed to print as normal.

Email
Email
Use the email facility to share your map with others. Click on "email" in the toolbar.A pop-up email service appears including a URL unique to the map you have created.

Comment
Comment
Only available in the Mangrove Review IMapS
Use the comment facility to send a comment and an attached file if required to the GIS data managers in UNEP-WCMC. Click on the comment button in the toolbar. Then click on the location you wish to comment on. A page opens allowing you to commento n that location and add a file when you hit submit this is sent through to the GIS managers and a pin point is added at the location on the map which you clicked on.
