DFID is a department of the British government and therefore is funded by UK taxpayers. DFID's activities are committed to International Development Targets, which involves direct poverty reduction work and work with multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, the United Nations and the European Union.

The Forestry Research Programme (FRP) is one of ten competitive grants programmes of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (RNRRS). FRP funds research and dissemination projects that are targeted at the eradication of poverty.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) works to encourage sustainable development through sound environmental practices. Its activities cover a wide range of issues, from atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems, the promotion of environmental science and information, to an early warning and emergency response capacity to deal with environmental disasters and emergencies. www.unep.org

Overseas Development Institute (ODI) is an independent not for profit organisation that focuses its work on International Development and Humanitarian Issues. Its role is to inform policy and practice which lead to the reduction of poverty, the alleviation of suffering and the achievement of sustainable livelihoods in developing countries. (They work both with partners from the public and private sectors, in both developing and developed countries.) Their five research and policy programmes are: Poverty and Public, International Economic Development, Humanitarian Policy, Rural Policy and Environment, Forest Policy and Environment. www.odi.org.uk

The ODI Forest Policy and Environment Group seeks to inform the processes of policy change in tropical forestry in order to sustainably improve the livelihoods and well-being of the forest- dependent poor. www.odi.org.uk/fpeg/index.html

Fauna and Flora International (FFI) is one of the longest established international conservation bodies. It is one of the few that aims to "protect the entire spectrum of endangered plant and animal species on the planet." http://www.fauna-flora.org/

Our in-country partners in Mexico, who implement the fieldwork for this project are 3 Non Government Organisations: Grupo de Estudios Ambientales (GEA), located in Mexico City and working in Guerrero,
Methodus Consultora located in Oaxaca and working principally in Oaxaca and Chiapas (http://www.raises.org/) and addition we work with Grupo Mesofilo located and working in Oaxaca (http://www.eco-index.org/ong/mesofilo-mx-esp.html).

RAISES (Red para el Aprendizaje e Intercambio para la Sistematización de Experiencias hacia la Sustentabilidad) is an NGO network which is working with different rural Mexican communities and social organisations to improve farmer managment of natural ressources and particulary Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). Description of development and research projects, cases studies, multimedia presentacions and articles are shown in this site.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded in 1945 with a mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity, and to better the condition of rural populations. Their work has focused on the alleviation of poverty and hunger by promoting agricultural development, improved nutrition and the pursuit of food security. www.fao.org

Forest Products Conservation
a programme of the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service
The Forest Service is an agency within the Department of Agriculture. It contains approximately 37,000 employees across 3 broad areas: (1) the National Forest System, responsible for management of the Nation's national forests, (2) Forest and Rangeland Research, conducts research on a broad range of forest and rangeland issues and transfers resulting technologies to users, and (3) State and Private Forestry, provides collaborative stewardship of our Nation's forests with other public and private organizations.
Within Forest Service Research there are 6 regional research stations and the Forest Products Laboratory. The Southern Research Station has laboratories and research work units located across the southern U.S. from Texas to Virginia and south to Florida. Research is conducted on a wide variety of forest-related topics, including wildlife and fisheries, economic and social impacts, wood utilization and harvesting, silviculture, and ecosystem processes.
Research work unit SRS-4702 of the Southern Research Station, located on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg Virginia, is devoted to tree quality assessment, automated wood processing, non-timber forest products, and solid wood recovery, reuse and recycling research. The mission of the unit is to enhance wood resource conservation and sustainability through advanced timber analysis and wood processing, and effective wood product recovery, reuse, and recycling.

IIED's Forestry and Land Use (FLU)
This programme aims to improve people's livelihoods from forest and land use on the basis of equity, efficiency and sustainability. This is achieved mainly through collaborative research with partners in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, China, South East Asia, Central and South America and Europe.

Natural Resources International (NRI)
NRI was established in 1996 by the UK's Overseas Development Administration (ODA which was DFID's predecessor). NRI is now an independent limited company, which is now owned by the University of Greenwich, the University of Edinburgh, and Imperial College London.

Netherlands Committee for IUCN
The Guiana Shield Initiative of the NC-IUCN is developing a regional compensation mechanism for the ecological goods and services provided by the intacts forests of the Guiana Shield ecoregion. This Initiative involves a component of sustainable livelihood development including NTFPs. This site is the result of the collaboration between the Virginia Tech Department of Wood Science and Forest products, the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station, and the Top of the Ozarks RC&D in Missouri. NTFP sub-sector Support Project in Vietnam

Smartwood
The oldest and most extensive certification body in the world, it is a programme of the Rainforest Alliance and is now accredited by the Forest Stewardship Counci (FSC). Smartwwod aims to increase the effectiveness of sustainable forestry in conserving biodiversity. www.smartwood.org

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
Support environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests. FSC overlooks the certification process and accredits certification bodies that respect the FSC certification principles.
Carrying an FSC logo is a sign that the forest is managed according to agreed social, economic and environmental standards. This certification process has been applied to timber, its application to NTFPs is in its planning phase. www.fsc.org

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)
An independent, non-profit research institute working in the field of sustainable development. IIED aims to provide expertise and leadership in researching and achieving sustainable development at local, national, regional and global levels. The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO)
aims to provide a framework for consultation among producer and consumer member countries on all aspects of the world timber economy within its mandate. www.itto.or.jp

The United Nations Development programme (UNDP)
works in 166 countries helping the latter develop local capacity in the following areas: Democratic Governance, Poverty Reduction, Crisis Prevention and Recovery, Energy and Environment, Information and Communications Technology, and HIV/AIDS. The Upper Lakes Environmental Research Network (ULERN)
A not-for-profit organisation, which is based in the Algoma Region, Canada. Its mission is to facilitate collaboration that promotes and enhances environmental and natural resource research & development, throughout the Upper Great Lakes Basin.

The World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF)
The World Agroforestry Center, which was formerly known as the International Center for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) was established in 1978. It focuses its research on the mitigation of tropical deforestation, land depletion and rural poverty through improved agroforestry systems. Agroforestry technologies can help farmers increase productivity and sustainability, while reducing land degradation. www.worldagroforestrycentre.org

The World Forestry Congress 2003
Took place in Montreal in September 2003, enabling forestry sector to exchange views and experience, discuss forestry issues and formulate broad regional or global recommendations.
